Events

We firmly believe that classical music is an exhilarating experience, and we're not just saying it—we have a Guinness World Record to back it up! Our Redmond school orchestras frequently venture beyond the confines of the classroom. They actively participate in local festivals, competitions, and embark on journeys across the country, from magical Disneyland to the iconic Carnegie Hall, to deliver captivating performances.

To demonstrate the sheer excitement of a classical ensemble performance, we orchestrated the unforgettable String Jam '10 in April 2010. This extraordinary event achieved a Guinness World Record for the world's largest string ensemble, featuring a remarkable 392 musicians spanning the age range from 5 to 75.

2012: Mini String Jams

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice! Through our Mini String Jams, high school musicians help elementary students learn the basics with group lessons and ensemble performances. It's a great opportunity for younger musicians to see what it's like in the high school orchestra room. Hopefully, our Mini String Jammers will be back in the high school orchestra room on their own before too long... ready to make their own trek to Carnegie Hall!

2011: Barrage!

Barrage, an internationally renowned string music group from Alberta, visited Redmond High School in May 2011. The musicians held an afternoon workshop for students from throughout the district, and then took the stage for an energetic performance. Students were able to join in on the final number, a big change from the usual scales and Tchaikovsky.

2011: Disneyland

In March 2011, the Redmond High School orchestras, bands, and choir loaded up a truck and took off for a little sun. They spent a week at Disneyland, performing in the bandstand and working with professional musicians to learn how to record the music scores to Disney films. Watch our orchestra in action in video 1 and video 2 as they get into the Disney spirit with a little Pirates of the Caribbean.

2010: String Jam '10

On April 10, 2010, 392 bassists, cellists, violinists, and violists set a Guinness World Record for the world's largest string ensemble! String Jam '10 gave our orchestras the chance to perform alongside hundreds of musicians from the community, from kindergarteners to professionals. We think we are probably one of the only school orchestra groups in the world to have our own world record. Want to experience it yourself? Check out the Redmond Reporter's video of the event.

2009: Carnegie Hall

In May 2009, 42 students from Redmind High School and Redmond Junior High made their Carnegie Hall debut, with Mrs. Fergus:on on the conductor's podium. Our orchestra successfully auditioned for a spot, and spent the year practicing and fundraising to prepare for the trip to New York City. We have been invited back, and we are making plans for an encore performance on March 31, 2013.

2009: Experience the Music

As part of our fundraising for the Carnegie Hall trip, we invited electric violinist Geoffrey Castle to perform for our orchestras. He included students from throughout the district in his performance, leading them in a string rendition of "Smoke on the Water," which became the inspiration for String Jam '10.
